Learning about a new industrial oilseed mustard, Brassica carinata (Ethiopian mustard), was a highlight for growers at the field day in Swift Current, July 12, 2011.
Developed with the help of research funds from the Saskatchewan Mustard Development Commission through Mustard 21 Canada Inc., the new crop has great value as an energy feedstock crop for the production of aviation biojet fuel.
Agrisoma Biosciences, a Canadian agriculture biotechnology company, is working to commercialize the crop and hopes to contract a significant acreage with growers in 2012.
In addition to hearing about the agronomics and economics of Carinata production, field day participants learned about research trials on condiment types of mustard and the Wheatland Conversation Area’s other work.
The field day was a joint effort between the Saskatchewan Mustard Development Commission and Wheatland Conservation Area with support from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture. |
